She was a Major from the 25th Dunedin company and part of a group of 12 others from Dunedin – including Olga Scott and Bessie Webster. The New Zealanders had to present Maori actions songs and Dorothy always used to laugh that she was the only blonde Maori in the group. She was described as quite a figure on that trip – she liked a lot of fun and laughter, and also kept in touch with many of those from that time.

Dorothy was instrumental in supporting newer leaders and some of their recollections are:

“I first met Dorothy when I was just commissioned in 1964 and I was informed that Major Dickson would come and inspect me at work in the company and I was worried sick about having to meet this very high up person. She was very correct but friendly but it was a nerve-wracking time. Afterwards when I got to know her I wondered how I could have been so frightened by her.”

Other recollections:

“We were on Regional Executive together and I used to get a ride with her to meetings and we were laughing all the time! In the early days we went to the meetings with Mrs MacKay who was the 1st Captain at 26th Dunedin and was also one of the early GLB National Presidents. She was a lovely lady and Dorothy used to tell everyone that she was her grandmother as Dorothy’s mother was a MacKay, they were actually no relation but Dorothy thought that Mrs. MacKay would be good as a grandmother – so therefore she claimed her as one”.

“I recall Dorothy coming down to North East Valley to assist with marking of badge subjects when we were younger.”

“Dorothy was always a very happy cheerful person to be around - you sure could count on having some good laughs with her, even to not too many weeks ago when I last visited her.”

“Dorothy was a very generous lady who gave her time freely over the years to her girls in her care within our organisation, Girls’ Brigade.”

“Dorothy was well liked and respected by all who knew her and she had a very bubbly personality and was a much-loved leader.”

Right up until her passing Dorothy always took an interest in what we as leaders were doing now in Girls’ Brigade and the girls achievements. If she could she always attended girls/Company/Area events that the Guild ladies were invited to and supported fundraising endeavours.

She is accurately described as being great fun and there was never a dull moment round her. She was a happy person who enjoyed the company of others. This is so very true of Dorothy and the number of Girls’ Brigade leaders (old and current) here today is a tribute in itself to how loved Dorothy was by us.

Proverbs 31:26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.

Dorothy will be missed.

Awesome Leadership 2019 Report

Girls’ Brigade New Zealand – Awesome Leadership Course 2019On the 17th-21st July, Awesome Leadership was held at the Hunua Falls Camp in Auckland. This year the course was a combined North and South Island course. A total of 35 girls attended the course from across New Zealand and leaders from Auckland and Christchurch. Our theme for camp this year was “Choose Real” the Choose Real Campaign is all about taking a stand to transform our culture and the way girls (and everyone) see themselves and the world - as whole, complete, not lacking, beautiful, so worthy and more!

The course kicked off on Wednesday night with an evening of speed gaming, much like speed dating the girls moved around the tables playing a board game for 3 minutes before moving onto the next game and a new partner picking up the game where the previous pair had finished. Everyone had a great time learning new games and playing some they hadn’t played in a long time whilst meeting other camp attendees.

On Thursday we began our level sessions, we were excited to launch a new syllabus for Awesome Leadership this year based on a similar programme run by GB Australia. Thursday evening we had a craft night, we painted and decorated wooden inspirational words and made macramé key chains while waiting for the paint to dry. The craft night was a hit and some amazing artworks were created.

Friday was a busy day. Level 2 girls braved the weather and went tree planting in the Waitawa Regional Park for their community service activity. They were joined by Charlotte Saunders (GBNZ National Commissioner) and Priscilla Penny (GB International President) and managed to plant around 200 trees. After a morning of planting, they came back to camp quite wet and rather muddy but very excited about what they had achieved. Whilst level 2 were playing outside in the rain the level 1 girls took part in a warmer community service activity learning how to knit and crochet peggy squares beside a warm fire as part of the little squares for little sprouts project set up but the organisation little sprouts. With the help of our two cooks Judith Martin and Lynne Prior, the girls were all knitting and crocheting in no time. In the afternoon, level 1 and 3 were also privileged to spend some time talking and sharing with Priscilla and Charlotte joining us for our afternoon sessions. Friday evening we relaxed with a movie night complete with ice cream sundaes and popcorn. The girls decided on the movie Brave, hoping to get some tips for their archery session on Saturday.

Saturday was an exciting day, the morning was level time then after lunch the girls were split into three groups for an hour archery lesson each at the Kokako lodge. It was just a short walk from our camp past the Hunua falls that were spectacular given the amount of rain we had had over the last few days. Everyone had a great time testing out their archery skills and a couple of girls even managed to hit the bullseye. The excitement continued into the evening as the level 3 group was in charge of preparing and hosting the awards night and dinner. The evening was a fantastic way to end the camp, the level 3 girls had decorated the dining hall beautifully as well as set up an amazing photo booth and dance floor for after dinner. Everyone was buzzing but eventually, we all got to bed.

Sunday was a beautiful sunny day but sadly our last day at camp, after our final debrief level session we cleaned up camp in record time meaning we could make the most of the sunny weather and try out the team activity challenge obstacle course at camp. This was a fun way to end camp before everyone headed home to get ready for school on Monday.

It was a privilege to work with such an amazing group of young ladies who will be our future leaders. A special thank you also to our level facilitators and assistants this year, the course would not have been able to run without your dedication and willingness to encourage and support our young leaders.

Michelle Martin

Awesome Leadership Course Convenor 2019

GB Prayer Resources 2019

Be:Joyful Prayer ResourceHERE2019 Prayer Calendar

Be:Joyful Prayer Resource

HERE

2019 Prayer Calendar

Awesome Leadership 2019 Scholarships

We are very excited to announce the availability of 10 scholarships to attend the 2019 Awesome Leadership course! The Board found this a very worthwhile exercise and are energised with the action plans going forward. The Strategic Plan will be sent out with the AGM documents. This month we are focusing on; ‘Equip the Sower: getting ourselves ready’ (Abiding in Christ). Use this month to help prepare for the year ahead. You may want to reflect on the Parable of the Sower in Matthew 13:1-23. In this parable, Jesus tells the story of a farmer who sows his seed. Some seed lands on the path and was eaten by birds, some fell on rocky ground and quickly died, some fell on the thorns and were choked by the plants and some fell on good soil and produced a large crop! Jesus explained what this meant including ‘…the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it.’ (Matthew 13:23) How can we make sure we are like good soil?

Source: GB Worldwide

Here are some things you can pray for: - Prayers for children going back to school and their teachers - Prayers for GB & IFG groups starting back for the year, for the girls, the leaders, and their plans for the year. Dear Lord, thank you for sowing your Word in us. May it take root and grow strong in our hearts. We pray that you continue to guide, protect and plant seeds of goodness within us. Equip us with the tools to help others to receive the Good News of Jesus. Like a good gardener uproots weeds and removes rocks from the soil, show us how to remove barriers and problems from peoples’ lives so that they may know how much you love them and care for them. Nourish our minds, bodies and souls as we prepare to live out your word and with joyful hearts, carry out good deeds and spread your gospel. Enable us to grow and flourish today and forevermore. In Jesus Christ’s name. Amen

Congrats to Sarah and Hayden

National Youth Representative-Elect Sarah McGechie married Hayden Kingi on January 10. The wedding took place in a garden at Bridgewater Country Estate on a scorching hot, but beautiful day!

Elizabeth Dickens receives Queens Honours

Most of you would have heard of Elizabeth who has been actively involved with GB for 50 years. In the New Year, it was announced she will be receiving a Queen's Service Medal for services to GB. Elizabeth has been a volunteer at GB and employed asthe National Administrative Director over the years. She is a huge inspiration for all she has contributed to GB - a very well deserved recognition!

A message from Elizabeth Dickens:

THANK YOU It is with much appreciation that I wish to thank everyone for the many messages of congratulations that I have received on being named in the New Year’s Honour List. It is an honour to receive the Queen's Service Medal and an acknowledgement of the work of Girls' Brigade. I have been overwhelmed by the number of messages and ask that you accept this thank you as my personal acknowledgement to you all.

UN's Commission on the Status of Women in New York

Four members of the Girls' Brigade International Presidents Committee will be attending this UN event in March. The Commission meets annually for a period of 10 working days each March in New York to evaluate progress on gender equality, identify challenges, set global standards and formulate concrete policies to promote gender equality and advancement of women worldwide.

Members of the GBI leadership team will be attending CSW in March 2019 in order to assess future opportunities. In the future, it is hoped that GB members (especially emerging leaders) will attend to develop advocacy, communication and leadership skills and facilitate faith-based workshops at the event.

Gaining UN consultative status was an intentional part of GB International’s advocacy strategy which it is developing alongside its missional and evangelistic ethos. Girls’ Brigade International President Mrs Priscilla Penny from Zimbabwe explains: ‘GBI’s advocacy development is about equipping girls and young women to turn up the volume of Gospel hope for girls in communities across the world. Girls’ Brigade cares for girls because God cares for girls. Unfortunately in many places, it is very challenging to be a girl. I’m more likely to not be able to read and write because I’m a girl. I’m more likely to have tears of sorrow (not tears of joy) on my wedding day because I’m a girl. I’m more likely not to have a choice about where and when my first sexual experience happens because I’m a girl.’

Dr Claire Rush, International Vice-President for Europe adds: ‘But there is always hope. God has used Girls’ Brigade to help girls flourish across the world by providing life skills, a caring family of leaders who invest in them and empower girls to discover ‘life to the full’.’

Girls’ Brigade International , Cliff College, Calver, Hope Valley, Derbyshire, S32 3XG Tel: +44 1246 582322 Email: home@gbworldwide.org

Notes:

Girls’ Brigade International is celebrating its 125 years of mission and ministry with mission in over 50 countries and 125,000 members across the globe. You can read more about its worldwide ministry here: www.gbworldwide.org

From Ireland and the UK to Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Americas and the Pacific, Girls’ Brigade now works alongside churches, governments, schools and many partners to fulfil our lasting vision of life transformation amongst girls. With strong roots of fun, friendship and discovery, GB continues to positively impact the lives of hundreds of thousands of girls and their families in a broad mix of countries and cultures.

The current President of GB International is Mrs Priscilla Penny from Zimbabwe. Priscilla was elected at the GB International Conference in Livingstone, Zambia in July 2018 and will serve a term of 4 years.

Dr Claire Rush is the youngest ever Vice-President of Girls' Brigade International (GB). She facilitates the development of Girls’ Brigade in Europe and has helped to lead a number of GBI’s advocacy projects including the application for UN accreditation.

GB International has been developing its advocacy ethos for a number of years after listening to its emerging leaders who are passionate about GB advocating on gender justice issues. Over the last 4 years, it has also campaigned for the release of the Chibok girls and other young women who have been kidnapped by Boko Haram in Nigeria (some of the kidnapped young women are GB members).

On 11 October 2018, UN’s International Day of the Girl, GBI will launch its new social activism toolkit to enable girls to transform their communities. ICGB has been and gone. I am humbled by being elected at IP for 2018 to 2022. 125 years on and we are still there… We must be doing something right.

At ICGB 2018, we heard and we learnt. We were challenged to keep the main thing, the main thing, to be Intentional in moving GB forward. Our eyes were opened to Generation Z, we need to remain relevant. We heard God speak to us in so many ways.

As we begin on this journey together for the next four years, I wonder what plans God has for us. I can only believe that it will be an exciting and fulfilling journey. What will be our objectives?

That GB will take its place as the Oldest and Strongest Christian Organisation focusing on Girl Child Issues. That GB members will be good stewards and take care of God’s creation – The Earth. That GB will make a Loud Noise that cannot be missed as it turns up the volume of Hope for Girls around the world. May the Girls Brigade be the FIRST TO PRAY, THE FIRST TO SPEAK AND THE FIRST TO ACT for safety and justice for the Girl child. As it say in Proverbs 31:8-9, “Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and the needy.”GB will empower and nurture our young women to drive the Mission and Vision of GB.

The Theme for 2019 is “Fruitful and Overflowing… Live Joyfully”. I tried to understand the term “Overflowing”. Producing Fruit is a process from preparing the soil, to harvest and then sharing the fruit. How do we get there? How do we get to a point where we move beyond private and personal breakthrough to being so full of the Holy Spirit that we become carriers of His Glory and have His presence overflow out of our inner spirit into every area of our soul, body and around us, bringing healing and freedom to those we come into contact with, to our girls especially as we seek to Transform Lives.

We maybe separated by land, water, different cultures, but we are one family with one Mission … to Transform the lives of the girls. In our Spotlight Fact Sheets we are taking a look at the way GB works in different countries around the world. We have already published Spotlights on Hong Kong and The British Virgin Islands and here is the next one. We’d love to hear from other countries that would like to be involved. So, if you would like to produce a fact sheet to tell others about GB in your part of the world, ask your GB national office to talk to your Fellowship IVP and she will let you know how to go about it. Happy reading more to follow…. very soon!

Resources

Download the SPOTLIGHT resources here:

Spotlight – British Virgin IslandsSpotlight – Hong KongSpotlight – AustraliaSpotlight – NigeriaSpotlight – Northern IrelandSpotlight – ZimbabweSpotlight – MalaysiaSpotlight – NiueSpotlight – ZambiaSpotlight – England & Wales
From :http://gbworldwide.org/resources/spotlight/

Aruk Omori – IVP for Africa

My name is Aruk O Omori‎ (Mrs), a Nigerian from Calabar in Cross River State. Over the last few weeks we have heard of the absolute devastation caused by hurricanes in some of our GB countries in the Caribbean and Americas Fellowship. Over the last few weeks we have heard of the absolute devastation caused by hurricanes in some of our GB countries in the Caribbean and Americas Fellowship. The monster category 5 hurricane Irma swept through and left devastation. The British Virgin Islands, Barbuda, St Martin, Turks & Caicos and Anguilla suffered extensive damages and are left with a trail of chaos, wreckage and flooding as it was one of the strongest hurricanes to hit the region in the last decade. Other countries such as St. Kitts and Nevis, Dominica and Bahamas were also affected though not to the same degree.

Our Caribbean friends are grateful for our prayers and our messages of love and support. But now is the time to consider how we can support them practically. We are launching an appeal to help them and if you, as an individual, or your company, or group, or church is able to send a small gift it will be gratefully received by our sisters in need. You may send donations via your fellowship, or donations can be made to Girls’ Brigade International simply by clicking here.
